Serving the Homeless

Our family volunteered with a local ministry, Our Calling. We first gathered at their warehouse and organized supplies and clothes. We put together bags to pass out to the homeless. In the bags were snacks, socks, a tshirt, gum, and a track (info about salvation). We also had bottled water and Bibles that we passed out as well as tubs of clothing that they could go through and choose items. However, our main focus was not to provide them with things but instead to provide them with the love of Christ. We interacted with them, prayed for them, and listened. It was a life changing experience. We all have a story. Some peoples' stories have rougher edges than others, but we all struggle with the same deep down hurts and hangups. I had the chance to talk to and pray with a 51 year old lady named Dorothy, Donald, Dee and his girlfriend Jennifer, and Diamond. TW connected with a few as well. One in particular is a guy names Wes. He is a recovering heroine addict, he has been sober for two years. TW spent quite a bit of time listening and talking with Wes. Wes had questions about the Christian faith and TW was able to teach him and guide him to some scripture. They seemed to have a great connection. I looked over while TW and him were praying and Wes was wiping tears from his eyes. He is about our age. TW invited him to church tomorrow. TW, James (our friend), and maybe I will go down to pick him up. We will take him for breakfast and then take him to church with us. I pray that this will be a relationship that will form that can help turn Wes' life around. I learned that we are all more alike than we are different. Check out the ministries website...
