Exactly Why I Say Merry Christmas!

So, this time of year I get really frustrated by this whole Happy Holidays term that is being thrown around now. The whole reason for this season, unless you are Jewish, is the birth of Christ...hence CHRISTmas. Offices are closed for Christmas, schools are closed for Christmas, restaurants are closed for Christmas, gas stations are closed for Christmas, heck almost everything stops for Christmas! If you drive through a seemingly otherwise busy town on Christmas it could be mistaken for a ghost town. I understand that not everyone shares my belief that Christmas is the time we celebrate Jesus' birth, but a majority of the country does celebrate some part of Christmas, even if it is time with family or time to stop and relax. So, why is it that we have to say Happy Holidays? Since when are people so touchy that you can't say Merry Christmas?
So, when I was sent an email with the following videos, the whole thing just got stirred back up for me.

You will need to pause the music that is playing on the right hand side of the screen before watching the videos.

Disclaimer...I had never heard of Mike Huckabee before I posted my last video with him. And, now I got this video sent to me with him in it as well. So, I am not like a die hard Huckabee fan, although I am starting to like the guy, it just happens that I keep seeing his videos.

I'M SO GLAD YOU POSTED THIS!!! Not just b/c I LOVE Huckabee, but b/c I also feel that people forget what Christmas is all about...the birth of Christ (CHRISTmas)! Great post, and "it's exactly why I say Merry Christmas" too! You go girl! =)

I agree that the season is about Christ, my beef is about how commercial it all is and that we are conditioned to believe the bigger the gift the more you love the person. Saying Merry Christmas is totally appropriate - I also think Happy Holidays is too. There are a few other big religious holidays being celebrated this time of year - Channukah, Kwanzaa, New Years and Christmas. We may not notice it as much because we celebrate Christmas, but things stop for those too. Why not be happy that they are all being celebrated? We could say "Merry Christmas and have a Happy Holiday Season"!! A nice marriage that celebrates and respects all religions and traditions.

Like you, I am a Christian, and celebrate the birth of Christ with my family. When I say "Happy Holidays" I am inferring Merry Christmas Eve, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, etc. I am not catering to the "touchy" or suppressing my own Christian beliefs. For me, "Happy Holidays" is a greeting for the entire season...it's plural; whereas "Merry Christmas" is a greeting for December 25...it's singular. With that said, I think we should all accept the well wishes we receive, whatever they may be, with thanks!

Good post. I think those who are so adverse to saying Merry Christmas or letting us celebrate it should have to work that day. Not going to get on my soap box. :o)
